Tune: Magnolia I (Yan Shu)
Text
English translation
English translation
After swallows and wild geese have passed, the orioles too depart. Looking closely at a fleeting life brings countless thoughts. How much of life lasts longer than a spring dream? Once it dissolves, the past scatters like autumn clouds, leaving no trace to find.
English translation
Even fabled lovers who understand one another through music and exchange tokens of affection may part; no grasp on a silk robe can keep someone from leaving. Do not insist on being the only sober soul: a few wholehearted toasts among the flowers may belong to life too.
Notes
First stanza
Migrating birds introduce reflection on life’s brevity. The spring dream and autumn clouds both emphasize how quickly things vanish. Rather than recount one specific event, the speaker senses impermanence through seasonal change.
Second stanza
The references to hearing music and exchanging a pendant allude to legendary lovers. The closing advice to drink is a gesture of release: it accepts that meetings cannot be held forever rather than endorsing excess.
