Tune: Magnolia II (Yan Shu)
Text
English translation
English translation
The pond is green, and a faintly warm breeze passes. The speaker remembers the first meeting with Yuzhen. The song begins again, its clear notes ringing like jade; as the music enters its faster concluding section, the dancer’s red skirts whirl.
English translation
Beneath the hooked railing and beside the fragrant steps, the speaker was so absorbed in drink that the slanting sun went unnoticed. Of those who once admired flowers together, fewer than half remain when counted now.
Notes
First stanza
“Yuzhen” may name the remembered person or carry an idealized, immortal quality; the poem does not explain. “Ru-po” refers to a brisk section in musical form. The vivid performance is recalled as part of a past gathering.
Second stanza
The stanza moves from the details of a former gathering to the present act of looking back. “Fewer than half” conveys the loss of old companions, not necessarily an exact count; the setting sun echoes the passing of that time.
