Tune: Butterflies in Love with Flowers (Feng Yansi)
Text
English translation
English translation
Who says that lingering feeling was cast off long ago? Each spring it returns with the same melancholy. Day after day the speaker drinks before the flowers, often falling ill from wine, and does not refuse even as the mirror shows a face growing thin.
English translation
Green grass grows beside the river, and willows line the embankment. Why does this fresh sorrow return year after year? Alone on the small bridge, sleeves filled with wind, the speaker watches a new moon rise above the level woods after everyone has gone home.
Notes
First stanza
“Idle feeling” here is not carefree leisure but a recurring emotion that cannot be dismissed. Drinking among flowers and seeing a thinning face show its toll, though the beloved is never identified. The anthology page prints the author as 冯延已; other transmitted texts identify him as 冯延巳, the name used here.
Second stanza
The stanza moves from its question into a quiet scene of bridge, wind-filled sleeves, and a new moon over the woods. “After people have gone home” sharpens the solitude; the recurring sorrow is left unexplained rather than assigned to one event.
