谷神不死，是谓玄牝。
English translation
The life-giving power of the valley never dies; it is called the mysterious female.
The valley suggests openness and receptivity, while the female image points to the enduring capacity from which life arises.

玄牝之门，是谓天地根。
English translation
The gateway of the mysterious female is called the root of heaven and earth.
“Gateway” pictures the opening through which things emerge, while “root” names the basis on which their growth depends. Both images describe the Way's generative role.

绵绵若存，用之不勤。
English translation
It continues in a fine, unbroken thread, barely seeming to exist; draw upon it, and it does not wear out.
The Way works without dramatic display but does not cease. Its subtle capacity is not depleted by use.
