43. The Softest Thing
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
天下之至柔,驰骋天下之至坚。
English translation
What is softest in the world can move freely through what is hardest in the world.
Softness is not powerlessness. Because it is not rigid and does not meet force head-on, it can adapt to obstacles and continue working through what is hard.
Original Chinese text
无有入无间,吾是以知无为之有益。
English translation
What has no solid form enters where there is no gap. From this I understand the benefit of acting without forcing.
“Acting without forcing” does not mean doing nothing. It means avoiding coercion and excessive interference, allowing influence to reach places that brute force cannot.
Original Chinese text
不言之教,无为之益,天下希及之。
English translation
Teaching without words and the benefit of acting without forcing—few in the world can attain these.
The deepest influence often comes through example and through leaving room for things to develop, not only through commands and lectures. Such restraint looks simple but is difficult to practice.
