26. The Heavy Root
Text
English translation
English translation
Weight is the root of lightness; stillness is the master of restlessness.
Light movement and quick action need a stable center. Without groundedness and calm, they easily become aimless or uncontrolled.
English translation
Therefore the wise person may travel all day without leaving the supply wagons behind.
The baggage train is both a practical necessity and an image of groundedness. Constant movement should not mean abandoning what provides stability and sound judgment.
English translation
Even amid splendid sights, one remains at ease and undisturbed.
Splendor may be present without taking control of the mind. Detachment here means composure and independence, not withdrawal from the world.
English translation
How can the lord of a state with ten thousand chariots treat himself and the world so lightly?
A ruler bears responsibilities on a vast scale. The greater the reach of one’s decisions, the more dangerous careless conduct becomes.
English translation
Lightness loses the root; restlessness loses command.
Groundedness gives a person a basis, and calm gives self-command. Carelessness and agitation undermine both.
