73. The Net of Heaven
Text
English translation
English translation
Boldness in daring to act can lead to death; boldness in daring not to act can preserve life.
The passage distinguishes reckless nerve from the courage of restraint. Not every refusal to push ahead is cowardice.
English translation
Of these two kinds of courage, one may bring benefit and the other harm.
The outcome depends on more than outward boldness. Timing, limits, and circumstances matter.
English translation
Who can know why Heaven rejects what it rejects?
The causes behind gain and loss are not always visible in advance, so judgment calls for humility and care.
English translation
For this reason, even the sage treats the matter as difficult.
Wisdom does not mean effortless certainty. It includes recognizing complexity and proceeding with caution.
English translation
The way of Heaven does not contend, yet it prevails well; it does not speak, yet it responds well; it does not summon, yet things come of themselves; it moves at an unhurried pace, yet plans well.
Enduring order need not rely on force or display. Its effectiveness appears through quiet, steady operation.
English translation
Heaven's net is vast; its mesh seems wide, yet nothing slips through.
Consequences may not appear at once, but delay does not mean escape from the patterns set in motion by one's actions.
