62. The Treasure of the Way
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
道者万物之奥。
English translation
The Way is the deep shelter of all things.
The word translated as “deep shelter” suggests both hidden depth and a place of refuge. The Way works beneath appearances and gives all things a ground to return to.
Original Chinese text
善人之宝,不善人之所保。
English translation
It is the treasure of good people and the refuge that preserves those who are not good.
The Way is not reserved for the morally accomplished. The good cherish it, while those who fall short are not cast away and still have room to change.
Original Chinese text
美言可以市,尊行可以加人。
English translation
Fine words can win approval, and honorable conduct can bring a person respect.
Speech and conduct can earn social esteem, but the next lines press further: even someone who lacks these merits should not simply be abandoned.
Original Chinese text
人之不善,何弃之有?
English translation
If a person is not good, why should that person be cast aside?
Falling short is a condition to be changed, not a final verdict that someone has no worth. The Way leaves open the possibility of return.
Original Chinese text
故立天子,置三公,虽有拱璧以先驷马,不如坐进此道。
English translation
Therefore, when an emperor is enthroned and the three highest ministers appointed, even the offering of a great jade disk carried before a four-horse team is not equal to offering this Way while seated.
Jade and horses stand for costly ceremonial gifts. The passage values a sound guiding principle above displays of wealth and rank.
Original Chinese text
古之所以贵此道者何?
English translation
Why did people of old value this Way so highly?
The question prepares the answer that follows: the Way's value lies not in splendor, but in the practical possibility it offers to people in need.
Original Chinese text
不曰:以求得,有罪以免耶?
English translation
Is it not said that by seeking through it one may find, and that those at fault may gain release from their wrongdoing?
The Way is available to those who seek and leaves those who err a chance to correct themselves. Its value lies in refusing to close the door on people.
Original Chinese text
故为天下贵。
English translation
Therefore the Way is valued throughout the world.
It is precious because it is open to all: it supports the good without abandoning those who have gone wrong.
