56. Mysterious Unity
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
知者不言,言者不知。
English translation
Those who truly understand do not speak lightly; those who keep talking do not truly understand.
The point is not to reject all speech, but to distinguish understanding from display. Real insight tends to make a person careful with words.
Original Chinese text
塞其兑,闭其门,挫其锐,解其分,和其光,同其尘,是谓玄同。
English translation
Restrain the openings of the senses, close the doors of distraction, blunt sharp edges, untangle divisions, soften the glare, and mingle with the dust. This is called profound unity.
By not being pulled outward or setting oneself apart through sharpness and display, one can loosen divisions and live in accord with the ordinary world.
Original Chinese text
故不可得而亲,不可得而疏;不可得而利,不可得而害;不可得而贵,不可得而贱。
English translation
Therefore, such a person cannot be won over by intimacy or rejected through distance; cannot be moved by benefit or harmed by injury; cannot be raised by honor or lowered by disgrace.
One who embodies profound unity is not controlled by closeness and distance, gain and harm, or status, because identity no longer rests on these outward distinctions.
Original Chinese text
故为天下贵。
English translation
Therefore, such a person is valued by all under heaven.
The value lies not in rank or fame, but in freedom from outward judgments and an ability to live in harmony with others.
