8. Like Water
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
上善若水。
English translation
The highest goodness is like water.
Water gives the following lines a concrete image for goodness: it nourishes, takes the low place, and does not contend.
Original Chinese text
水善利万物而不争,处众人之所恶,故几于道。
English translation
Water benefits all things well and does not compete. It stays in places that people dislike, and so it comes close to the Way.
Water is useful without claiming credit and naturally seeks the low ground. It resembles the Way in how it acts, though the text does not simply equate the two.
Original Chinese text
居善地,心善渊,与善仁,言善信,正善治,事善能,动善时。
English translation
In dwelling, choose fitting ground; in mind, be deep and still; in dealing with others, be kind; in speech, be trustworthy; in governing, bring order; in work, use ability; in action, choose the right time.
The passage applies the example of water to seven parts of life. Sound conduct comes from responding to each situation in the way best suited to it.
Original Chinese text
夫唯不争,故无尤。
English translation
Precisely because one does not contend, one incurs no blame.
Not contending is not simple passivity. It means acting without trying to seize advantage or defeat others, thereby avoiding needless conflict and resentment.
