36. Subtle Illumination
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
将欲歙之,必固张之;将欲弱之,必固强之;将欲废之,必固兴之;将欲夺之,必固与之。
English translation
If something is to contract, it must first be stretched open. If it is to weaken, it must first grow strong. If it is to fall, it must first rise. If it is to be taken away, it must first be given.
Conditions often turn toward their opposites when pushed far enough; apparent advance may already contain the beginning of reversal.
Original Chinese text
是谓微明。
English translation
This is called subtle insight.
It means recognizing the direction of change while its signs are still faint.
Original Chinese text
柔弱胜刚强。
English translation
The soft and yielding overcome the hard and forceful.
What yields can adapt, endure, and avoid direct collision, allowing it to outlast rigid strength.
Original Chinese text
鱼不可脱于渊,国之利器不可以示人。
English translation
Fish must not leave the deep water; a state's sharp instruments of power must not be displayed to others.
Just as depth protects fish, restraint protects a state's essential capacities; displaying them invites rivalry and trouble.
