Sincerity and Knowing the Good

Mencius said, “If someone in a lower position fails to win the confidence of those above, the people cannot be governed. There is a way to win the confidence of superiors: without the trust of friends, one cannot gain it. There is a way to gain friends’ trust: if one cannot please one’s parents in serving them, friends will not trust one. There is a way to please one’s parents: if one examines oneself and is not sincere, one will not please them. There is a way to make oneself sincere: without understanding what is good, one cannot make oneself sincere. Sincerity is the Way of Heaven; seeking sincerity is the way of humanity. None has ever been utterly sincere yet failed to move others; none who is insincere has ever managed to move them.”
