孟（mèng）子（zǐ）曰（yuē）：（）“（）君（jūn）子（zǐ）之（zhī）泽（zé），（）五（wǔ）世（shì）而（ér）斩（zhǎn）；（）小（xiǎo）人（rén）之（zhī）泽（zé），（）五（wǔ）世（shì）而（ér）斩（zhǎn）。（）予（yú）未（wèi）得（dé）为（wéi）孔（kǒng）子（zǐ）徒（tú）也（yě），（）予（yú）私（sī）淑（shū）诸（zhū）人（rén）也（yě）。（）”（）

Mencius said, “The influence of a noble person fades after five generations; so does the influence of a petty person. I was not able to become a direct disciple of Confucius; I could only learn privately from other worthy people.”
