孟（mèng）子（zi）曰（yuē）：（）“（）仁（rén），（）人（rén）心（xīn）也（yě）。（）义（yì），（）人（rén）路（lù）也（yě）。（）舍（shě）其（qí）路（lù）而（ér）弗（fú）由（yóu），（）放（fàng）其（qí）心（xīn）而（ér）不（bù）知（zhī）求（qiú）。（）哀（āi）哉（zāi）！（）人（rén）有（yǒu）鸡（jī）犬（quǎn）放（fàng），（）则（zé）知（zhī）求（qiú）之（zhī）；（）有（yǒu）放（fàng）心（xīn），（）而（ér）不（bù）知（zhī）求（qiú）。（）学（xué）问（wèn）之（zhī）道（dào）无（wú）他（tā），（）求（qiú）其（qí）放（fàng）心（xīn）而（ér）已（yǐ）矣（yǐ）。（）”（）

Mencius said, “Benevolence is the human heart; righteousness is the human path. To abandon that path and refuse to follow it, and to lose one’s heart without knowing to seek it—how lamentable! When people lose a chicken or dog, they know to look for it; when they lose their heart, they do not. The way of learning is no more than seeking the heart one has lost.”
