孟（mèng）子（zi）曰（yuē）：（）“（）五（wǔ）谷（gǔ）者（zhě），（）种（zhǒng）之（zhī）美（měi）者（zhě）也（yě）。（）苟（gǒu）为（wèi）不（bù）熟（shú），（）不（bù）如（rú）荑（tí）稗（bài）。（）夫（fū）仁（rén），（）亦（yì）在（zài）乎（hū）熟（shú）之（zhī）而（ér）已（yǐ）矣（yǐ）。（）”（）

Mencius said, “The five grains are among the finest kinds of crops. If they do not ripen, they are no better than wild grasses such as ti and bai. Benevolence is the same: what matters is bringing it to maturity.”
