What Is Truly Worthy of Honor?

Mencius said, “Everyone shares the desire for honor. Yet each person has something more honorable within; people simply fail to reflect on it. The honor people prize is not the true kind of honor: Zhao Meng can make someone honored and can also make that person low. The Book of Songs says, ‘Having drunk wine to intoxication, one is filled with virtue.’ This means being filled with benevolence and righteousness, so one does not crave another’s rich food. A good name and broad praise resting on oneself make one unwilling to desire another’s embroidered clothing.”
