Caring for Oneself as One Cares for Trees

Mencius said, “When people want a small paulownia or catalpa sapling, only a handspan or two in girth, to grow, they know how to care for it. Yet when it comes to themselves, they do not know how to cultivate themselves. Is it because they care less for themselves than for those trees? They simply have not thought deeply enough.”
