English translation

As the New Year arrives, homesickness grows especially urgent; alone at the edge of the sky, I cannot stop my tears.

The word "qie" (切) means urgent; "the edge of the sky" is the farthest place. The New Year is a time for reunion, and the contrast throws the solitude into sharper relief.

Having grown old, I still rank below others; spring has returned home before me, a wanderer far from home.

'Spring returns before the traveler' is the famous line: even the season can go home, while the man cannot; the comparison is with a season. Its cleverness lies in a complaint that is never openly shown.

The monkeys of Lingnan keep me company morning and night; the river willows share with me the wind and mist.

The words 'together' and 'share' pull unrelated things into companionship; by inversion, this says there is no single person to be together with.

I am already like Jia Yi, exiled to Changsha; from now on, how many more years?

'Tutor of Changsha' refers to Jia Yi, who was exiled as Grand Tutor to the King of Changsha for three years. The last line ends with a question: it asks how many years, and also whether he can go back.

The Standard Shape of an Exile Poem

Liu Changqing wrote this while exiled to Nanba, in what is now Guangdong. The four couplets are the four steps of an exile poem: situation (alone at New Year), standing (old and low in rank), surroundings (gibbons and willows), and finally a historical parallel (Jia Yi). The order runs from present to past and from near to far, ending on an uncertain future. The form is highly fixed; what matters is whether each line is concretely written.

Why the Second Couplet Is Best Known

"Spring goes home ahead of the traveller" works because it makes an impossible comparison. Spring has no home, yet the poet lets it arrive first, which files him below a season. The latter half, "old and under others," states plainly; the former half turns. Together they complete each other: one gives the fact, one the feeling. Tang verse often pairs the two inside one couplet, and the reading gains depth.

Ending on Jia Yi: Elevation or Lowering?

Comparing himself to Jia Yi is half a claim to talent (Jia was a great talent of the Han) and half a claim to hard luck (Jia was exiled and died young). Both meanings hold at once, which is why the allusion fits here. Liu Changqing does not ask when he may return, only "how many years more," and the tone retreats from the grand parallel to counting days — what remains is a specific span of time and a home he cannot get back to.
