203. Untitled (Phoenix-Tail Gauze, Thin, Several Layers) | Li Shangyin
Text

English translation
Phoenix-tail gauze, thin, several folds; the green-patterned round canopy stitched deep into the night.
Phoenix-tail gauze and green-patterned canopy are names of bed-curtains — being made ready for a meeting that may never come. Stitching deep into the night, she sews a wedding that exists only in her hands.

English translation
The round fan cut like the moon's disc cannot hide her blush; a carriage passes with a sound of thunder, not one word exchanged.
The fan like the moon recalls Ban Jieyu's verse. The carriage like thunder may be the other's carriage passing (a common note cites Sima Xiangru's Changmen Fu: 'the sound resembles my lord's carriage'), or it may simply be the sound of a carriage; the poem does not settle whose carriage it is. The encounter remains unfinished, and the whole poem begins from it.

English translation
The golden wick burned down to dark ash — so long the solitude; the pomegranate blossoms all red, and still no word.
The golden ash is the trace of sitting all night; the pomegranate red is early summer's season — another quarter gone. Two exhibits record two spans: the length of a night and the length of waiting.

English translation
The dappled steed is tied only at the weeping-willow bank; where is the kindly southwest wind to carry me to him?
The dappled steed is a fine horse, here referring to the other's carriage and horses — his horse is tethered nearby, yet he cannot come. The kindly wind borrows Cao Zhi's Seven Sorrows: 'Would I were the southwest wind, to fly forever into his embrace' — the speaker would become the wind and go to him, but even the wind cannot be counted on.
Commentary
An Untitled Poem in a Woman's Voice: the Monologue of the One Stitching
The speaker of this Untitled poem has always been read as a woman: stitching the canopy deep into the night (waiting made into trousseau), the fan hiding her blush (shyness under gaze), the pomegranate reddening with no word (youth betrayed). Li Shangyin's cross-voiced writing is general in the Untitled group — men writing women's hearts since the palace style — but Yishan's singularity is that his women are never objects of desire; they are agents: the stitching is hers, the shyness hers, the gazing hers. Critics (Liu Xuekai among them) read the group as his own sealed-off hoping — speaking the unspeakable situation through a woman's voice: the man she waits for cannot come, as he was cut off by faction and never employed.
The Golden Ash and the Pomegranate Red: Two Exhibits of Waiting
The third couplet offers no feeling, only exhibits: the golden ash (the wick burned down) proves the night's length — sitting until the lamp dies; the pomegranate red proves the season's march — spring into summer. The cruelty of the exhibits is their stillness: ash does not rekindle, blossom does not rewind — time's passing here is one-way and material. The empty words once was and never any frame the couplet's feeling: once so long the solitude (there was), never any word (nothing returned) — the having and the lacking speak the whole pain of waiting. Li Shangyin writes waiting by audit: no weeping, only inventory.
The Carriage Like Thunder: an Encounter Decided by Vehicles
The couplet's encounter is a miss at the scale of vehicles: she in her carriage (the thunder of wheels), he on foot or standing — two routes crossing for an instant on the road, the moon-like fan hiding her face, not one word exchanged. The etiquette of Tang roads (women traveling enclosed in carriages with curtains) fixes the whole tragedy of such meetings: visible, unreachable, by institution. Ban Jieyu's round-fan allusion casts a shadow: in Ban's poem the fan is the emblem of the abandoned (laid aside when autumn comes) — in the instant she hides her blush, the poem has already hinted the outcome. Two objects — fan and carriage — carry the entire narrative of an encounter; the words saved are more than the words spent.
