149. Thinking of the Past on the Chu River | Ma Dai
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
露气寒光集,微阳下楚丘。
English translation
The breath of dew and cold light gather; the faint sun sinks below the Chu hills.
"Gather" means to collect; "faint sun" is the lingering light of the setting sun. The opening couplet sets the poem's cold, clear tone.
Original Chinese text
猿啼洞庭树,人在木兰舟。
English translation
Apes cry in the trees by Dongting Lake; a person sits in a magnolia-wood boat.
"Magnolia boat" comes from the Chu Ci; it means a fine vessel and also carries a Chu local colour. This couplet is the poem's famous lines, each line a scene of its own.
Original Chinese text
广泽生明月,苍山夹乱流。
English translation
On the broad marsh a bright moon rises; green mountains hem in the turbulent current.
The word "rises" describes the moon coming up from the lake's surface; "hem in" describes how the two mountains narrow the water. One opens, one closes.
Original Chinese text
云中君不见,竟夕自悲秋。
English translation
The Lord in the Clouds is not to be seen; all night I grieve alone over autumn.
"Lord in the Clouds" is the name of a deity in the Nine Songs of the Chu Ci; here it stands both for the person longed for and for what cannot be reached. The closing line ends with "grieving autumn alone," returning to personal feeling.

怀古诗里的楚地 · Chu in a Poem of Remembrance
题作「楚江怀古」,全诗用了大量楚地的符号:洞庭、木兰舟、云中君、悲秋。「悲秋」本身就是宋玉以来楚地的传统。马戴没有具体讲哪一段历史,而是把楚地的意象集中起来,营造一种整体的惆怅。这类怀古诗的重点不在史事,在地域文化带来的情绪底色。
Titled "Thinking of the Past on the Chu River," the poem uses the region's markers throughout: Dongting, the magnolia boat, the Lord in the Clouds, grieving autumn. Grieving autumn is itself a Chu tradition going back to Song Yu. Ma Dai does not narrate any particular event; he gathers Chu's images to make a general melancholy. Poems of this kind are less about historical fact than about the emotional colour a region carries.
「猿啼洞庭树,人在木兰舟」 · "Gibbons Cry in the Dongting Trees, a Man Sits in a Magnolia Boat"
这一联常被单独摘出来,因为它把人和环境摆得极清楚:上句全是声音和野性,下句全是人的位置。人在船上,船在湖上,猿在岸上,三层空间叠在一起,中间没有任何连接词。马戴不说自己孤独,只把自己放在这个位置上。唐诗写孤独,最好的方式往往就是安排位置。
The couplet is often quoted on its own because it places man and environment so clearly: the first line all sound and wildness, the second purely where the man is. Man in a boat, boat on the lake, gibbons on the shore — three layers of space stacked with no connective in between. Ma Dai does not say he is alone; he sets himself in that position. In Tang verse the best way to write solitude is often to arrange positions.
末句为什么回到「自」 · Why the Last Line Returns to "Alone"
前面三联都在写景,范围极大:露气、楚丘、洞庭、广泽、苍山。末句忽然收到一个「自」字上——这么大的景象,只有一个人在看。这个收缩让全诗有了焦点。马戴用「竟夕」交代时间长度,用「自」交代人数,一句之内把整夜的孤单说完了。
The three couplets before are all scenery and enormous in scope: dew, Chu hills, Dongting, broad marsh, green mountains. The last line contracts to the single word "alone" — all that sight, and only one person watching. The contraction gives the poem a focus. Ma Dai uses "all night" for length and "alone" for number, finishing a whole night's solitude inside one line.
