The sighing east wind brings the fine rain; beyond the lotus pond sounds a soft thunder.

The soft thunder is spring thunder and, by metaphor, carriage wheels (Sima Xiangru's Long Gate Rhapsody likened carriage sound to thunder) — a carriage beyond the pond: the sound of hope.

The golden toad-shaped incense burner bites the lock, and incense smoke enters through it; the jade tiger-shaped windlass pulls its silk rope, and drawn well-water returns.

The golden toad is the toad-shaped incense burner, biting the lock, through which incense smoke enters; the jade tiger is the tiger-shaped windlass ornament. Incense can enter, well-water can be drawn: both are images of passage — no door stops the one determined to enter.

Jia's daughter peeped through the blind, drawn by the young Han Shou; the goddess of the Luo left her pillow, won by the Prince of Wei's genius.

Both allusions turn on initiative: Jia Chong's daughter spied Han Shou, stole the imperial incense to give him, and they married; the goddess of the Luo left her pillow for Cao Zhi — in love it is the woman who moves first.

Let not the spring heart vie with the flowers to bloom: each inch of longing burns down to an inch of ash.

The closing is his most famous aphorism: longing measured in inches, burned to inches — in the exact exchange rate lies perfect sobriety.

An Inch of Longing, an Inch of Ash: the Physics Inside a Love Poem

The closing line is reckoned the most thorough in the Chinese love lyric. Its power is the equation: one inch of longing equals one inch of ash — perfect parity of input and output, no transcendence that moves heaven, no consolation of another life. The equation comes from the experience of incense: a heart-shaped coil burned through keeps its form in ash, inch for inch — Li Shangyin turned the commonest observation at the burner into love's accounting. Let not the spring heart vie with the flowers is advice, but advice only the already-burned can give: flowers bloom to fall, hearts heat to ash — and the one advised includes himself. Qian Zhongshu cited the line for the heat inside Li Shangyin's cold: the colder the counsel, the truer the burning.

Two Allusions, One Theme: the Woman Moves First

Jia's daughter at the blind and the goddess leaving her pillow are a chosen pair: Jia Chong's daughter spied the handsome Han Shou, stole the rare incense bestowed by the emperor to give him (the incense betrayed the affair), and Jia Chong married her to him; the goddess of the Luo left her pillow in the myth-cycle of Cao Zhi's rhapsody. The allusions share one point: the initiative belongs to the woman. The line joins the soft thunder of the opening (she hears the carriage) and the opened lock, the drawn well of the second couplet (neither gate nor parapet stops anyone): the whole poem argues that desire cannot be barricaded — the outer devices fail, and what is scarce is only the courage to act. The poem writes the courage of the women; the speaker has only looking-on and dissuasion left.

The Golden Toad Grips the Lock: a Close Reading of Boudoir Machinery

The two objects of the second couplet are ordinary fixtures of a Tang lady's quarters: the toad-shaped lock on the door-bar, the tiger-ornamented windlass at the well. Their function in the love poem is to make barriers concrete: lock and well are designed to keep apart, yet in the poem both run their course — the incense enters, the water comes back. The method's finesse lies in never saying nothing can keep us apart; the objects are simply shown failing at their duty. Zhu Heling, Feng Hao and other commentators once examined the very forms of toad-lock and tiger-windlass, which tells of the couplet's factual base: these are not generic gold-and-jade images but devices with working parts — and the more concrete the device, the more vivid its dereliction.
