267. A Spring Song | Liu Yuxi
Text
English translation
English translation
With fresh makeup that suits her face, she comes down from the red tower; spring light lies locked inside the courtyard, and the whole yard is grief.
That the makeup suits her face means it is just right, showing she has taken care. The locked-in spring light means both that the courtyard is shut and that her youth is confined within it; the whole yard is grief turns an invisible feeling into something that fills the entire space.
English translation
She walks to the middle of the courtyard and counts the blossoms one by one; a dragonfly lights on her jade hairpin.
The jade hairpin is a jade ornament for the hair. Counting blossoms is something to do out of sheer boredom, and the more deliberate the act, the deeper the loneliness. The dragonfly, mistaking the jade for a branch, provides the poem's only movement and sets off the stillness around her.
Commentary
Dressed Carefully, With No One to See
The opening line shows her dressing with real care, yet no guest and no meeting follow—only a courtyard in which spring is shut up. The better the makeup, the more visible the empty waiting. Her sorrow comes not from a particular event but from the whole situation of having no one to come.
Why the Dragonfly Is the Finest Touch
Counting blossoms is a still, idle gesture, and just as the reader expects the poem to end there, a dragonfly lights on her hairpin. It may mistake the jade for a flower, or simply pause by chance. Either way, in a courtyard where no one notices her, she suddenly has a tiny visitor. The loneliness is not dispelled, but it gains a touch of charm.
