192. Dispelling Grief, No. 2 | Yuan Zhen
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
昔日戏言身后意,今朝都到眼前来。
English translation
Those things you once said in jest about the arrangements after death have all come true before my eyes today.
The jest about arrangements after death is the couple's idle talk. The terror of all come true before my eyes: every joke fulfilled — and the one who said them is gone.
Original Chinese text
衣裳已施行看尽,针线犹存未忍开。
English translation
Your clothes I have given away, and the giving is nearly done; your needlework I keep, not able to bear opening it.
Giving away the dead's clothing was Tang custom, for merit. Already given against cannot bear to open: what could be dealt with he dealt with; what could not, he dare not touch.
Original Chinese text
尚想旧情怜婢仆,也曾因梦送钱财。
English translation
Remembering her old kindness I treat even her maids and servants gently; and once, dreaming of her, I burned paper money.
Treating her servants gently is feeling displaced: what she loved, he loves. Sending money because of a dream was the custom of burning paper — dreaming she lacked money, he woke and burned more.
Original Chinese text
诚知此恨人人有,贫贱夫妻百事哀。
English translation
I know well this grief is everyone's; but for a couple poor and lowly, a hundred things each bring sorrow.
The closing line is the famous line of the whole sequence: the concession that 'this grief is everyone's' lifts the poor couple's sorrow above the common — partners who shared poverty find each relic and each old matter one layer sadder than others.

玩笑话应验:悼亡诗最残忍的入口 · A Jest Fulfilled: the Cruelest Entrance to a Poem of Mourning
A mourning poem usually opens straight on grief; Yuan Zhen enters through a jest: the couple's idle talk, joking about how things should be arranged after death — and now those words have come true word for word. The cruelty is the interval: when the words were spoken they belonged to a daily life of two; fulfilled, they belong to a daily life of one. All come true before my eyes is flat statement, not one word of sorrow; the sorrow lives in the self-motion of come — the arrangements walked into view on their own, no one pushing. Old critics called it the deepest pain in the plainest words, and the gap is his signature: no allusion, no figure, only the couple's own words.
已施与未忍:两种遗物的分界 · Already Given and Cannot Bear to Open: the Boundary Between Two Kinds of Relics
The second couplet makes a fine division: the clothes may be given away (already given); the needlework dare not be opened (cannot bear to open). Where is the line? Clothes were daily wear, and giving them away suits the kindness she showed in life; the needlework is her craft, her living hand — to open it is to face the emptiness where she sat working. Giving is one way of parting; not bearing is another — neither reaches completion. The division exposes the truth of mourning: relics have no objective value, only subjective minefields — whether a thing explodes depends on which piece of daily life it locks in.
贫贱夫妻百事哀:一句诗的社会史 · A Couple Poor and Lowly, a Hundred Things Sorrowful: the Social History Inside One Line
The line became a proverb of the language because it names a fact poetry usually avoids: the depth of mourning is proportional to the texture of the life shared. A rich couple's grief comes wrapped in ritual and decorum; a poor couple's grief is itemized — every remembered thing carries the undertone of hardship (the searched chest, the pulled pin, the bean-leaves), and in every small thing the struggle they shared. The concession of I know well this grief is everyone's is rhetorical mastery: grant first that death equalizes all, then show that equal death falling on unequal lives does not weigh the same. The line has since left its poem to become the common tongue for the sorrows of poor marriages — a sentence of verse outliving every commentary upon it.
