English translation

Toward evening, uneasy at heart, I drive my carriage up the ancient plain.

Toward evening places the moment near dusk, and ill at ease describes the mood. The climb is not a planned excursion but an attempt to relieve that unease.

English translation

The setting sun is beautiful beyond measure; only, it is already close to dusk.

Only carries a turn of regret. The beauty is not cancelled by its approaching end; its brevity is precisely what makes the sight difficult to leave.

The View Does Not Simply Cure the Mood

The poet climbs because he feels unwell at heart and does find a magnificent sunset, yet the final line retains the unease. The view opens the mind while reminding him that daylight is ending. The poem does not complete a neat change from sadness to happiness; it allows two perceptions to remain together: the sight is beautiful, and its time is short.

Not Merely a Pessimistic Saying

Quoted alone, close to dusk can become a simple emblem of decline and helplessness. Within the poem, beautiful beyond measure matters equally. Li Shangyin does not say that a setting sun is unworthy because it will disappear. He affirms its beauty and then admits that beauty cannot be held. Regret grows from valuing the scene, not rejecting it.
