237. Spring Grievance | Jin Changxu
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
打起黄莺儿,莫教枝上啼。
English translation
Drive the little oriole away; do not let it keep singing on the branch.
The diminutive gives the line a colloquial voice. Her anger at the bird is displaced feeling: she does not hate spring, but resents the song for interrupting a dream of the absent man.
Original Chinese text
啼时惊妾梦,不得到辽西。
English translation
Its cry startles me from my dream before I can reach Liaoxi.
Liaoxi was a northeastern frontier, suggesting that the absent man is serving far away. The dream is cut short before arrival, while the waking distance is greater still.
赏析 · Commentary
诗从一句气话开始 · The Poem Begins with an Irritated Command
前两句听起来像嫌鸟吵,后两句才交代原因。黄莺没有做错什么,真正无法改变的是远人戍边、自己不能相见。她能做的只有赶走惊梦的鸟。把巨大的离别压进一个日常动作,诗的口气很轻,处境却不轻。
At first the speaker seems merely annoyed by a noisy bird; only the second couplet explains why. The oriole has done nothing wrong. What cannot be changed is the man's frontier service and their separation. All she can do is chase away the creature that ended the dream. A large absence is compressed into an ordinary gesture, light in tone but not in circumstance.
梦是唯一走得到的路 · The Dream Is the Only Road She Can Travel
现实中,她无法前往辽西,梦里却可以一路追去。因此鸟鸣打断的不只是睡眠,而是一次难得的相见。末句用“不到”停住:没有写见面,也没有写醒后的哭泣,只留下路程未完。读者从这个未完成的动作中知道两地有多远。
In waking life she cannot go to Liaoxi, but in sleep she can travel toward it. The bird interrupts not merely rest but a rare meeting. The final phrase stops at could not reach: there is no reunion and no description of tears after waking, only an unfinished journey. Its incompletion measures the distance between them.
