257. Meeting Li Guinian in Jiangnan | Du Fu
Text
English translation
English translation
In Prince Qi's residence I used to see you often; before Cui Jiu's hall I heard you sing time after time.
Li Guinian was a celebrated musician of the High Tang. The two households evoke elite gatherings in the capital, while often and time after time show that such music once belonged to ordinary life within that prosperous world.
English translation
Now, amid Jiangnan's lovely scenery, I meet you again in the season of falling blossoms.
Falling blossoms first belong to the actual late-spring scene, but they also suggest vanished splendor and lives cast adrift. The poem never names war or decline; it places a poet and a former court musician together in this southern landscape and lets the meeting carry the history.

What Happened Between the Two Meetings
The first couplet belongs to High Tang Chang'an; the second to Jiangnan many years later. The poem does not fill in the history between them, yet the An Lushan upheaval has altered where everyone stands. The princely performances are gone, and poet and musician have both drifted south. I meet you again sounds calm, but its force comes from knowing that the two scenes can never be joined as before.
Why Lovely Scenery Is Not Simple Praise
Jiangnan is genuinely beautiful, and late spring genuinely brings falling flowers, so the lines are not ironic in any simple sense. Beauty does not erase the history visible in the reunion; it sharpens it. Nature continues through its seasons, while a human world of splendor cannot be restored in the same way. Du Fu adds no verdict, allowing lovely and falling to qualify each other.
