11. Seeing Qi Wuqian Home After He Failed the Examination | Wang Wei

Original Chinese text

English translation

In a sage age there are no hermits; the gifted all come in.

The opening is the standard praise: the age is good, so talent arrives. Wang Wei starts here so that what follows — failing the examination — has something to stand against.

English translation

So even the man of East Mountain has no time to gather vetch.

East Mountain points to Xie An's retirement, gathering vetch to Bo Yi and Shu Qi. Together they say: this age has drawn out even the man who should have stayed hidden.

English translation

He arrived, but the ruler's gate is far; who will say my way is wrong?

'The gate is far' is how a failure is put. The first half accepts the result; the second refuses the verdict — failing the examination is not the same as being wrong.

He spent Cold Food in the Jianghuai country, and sews spring clothes in Luoyang.

The couplet traces the journey after the failure: Cold Food on the way in, spring clothes being made on the way home. The two seasonal markers show how long the round trip took.

Original Chinese text

English translation

Wine set out beside the long road; the one who shares my mind is leaving me.

'Leaving' carries the separation. The first line is the farewell scene, the second moves to what the two men are to each other.

Original Chinese text

English translation

You will soon be poling your cassia oars, and before long push open your bramble gate.

Both lines reckon time: the route is by water, home is not far off. Wang Wei does not say 'go slowly'. He says you will be home soon.

Original Chinese text

English translation

Distant trees draw the traveller along; a lone village faces the setting light.

These lines are imagined after the leave-taking: the figure is drawn off among the trees, the village sits against the sunset. What is written is what Wang Wei sees from the road.

Original Chinese text

English translation

My counsel simply was not taken — do not say those who understand you are few.

The close is consolation: not being hired is not the same as not being understood. The word rendered 'simply' turns the failure into a contingency.

Praise First, Then the Bad News

The first four lines argue one thing: the age is sage, so even hermits have come out of the hills. The claim itself is formulaic, and Wang Wei uses it as an opening because it moves the blame off Qi Wuqian. If everyone of talent has come in, then failing is not a matter of ability — it is the outcome of one selection. The opening reads as praise of the age; what it does is prepare the consolation, so that by the time he reaches 'who will say my way is wrong' he has grounds for saying the way was not wrong.

Two Festivals Measure the Journey

This is the only place in the poem where time is given. Cold Food on the way in, spring clothes being sewn on the way back: a whole spring lies between the two markers. Wang Wei does not say how long Qi Wuqian stayed in the capital, how the failure happened, or what it felt like. Two points in time are all he supplies, and the length of the journey and the wait come out of the gap between them. It also avoids the hardest thing to write — the days around the failure itself are left untouched.

Reckoning the Day He Gets Home

Farewell poems usually warn about the road or arrange the next meeting. What Wang Wei calculates is the date of arrival: the boat leaves, and before long the gate at home is pushed open. The angle shifts attention from leaving to arriving. The couplet that follows — trees drawing the traveller off, a lone village against the sunset — is the view from the roadside, and once it is written the poem has already moved to Qi Wuqian's side of the journey rather than staying at the place of parting.

The Single Word 'Simply'

The force of the closing couplet sits in one word. The counsel was 'simply' not taken — not rejected because it was bad. Wang Wei defines the failure as contingency and stops the consolation there: not being hired does not mean no one understands you. He does not promise success next time and does not accuse the court of blindness. Both lines stay restrained, because anything stronger would ring false — Qi Wuqian has just failed, and no optimistic forecast would survive contact with that.
