English translation

The clouds part, and far off I can see the city of Hanyang; still this lone sail has a full day's journey to go.

The distant sight and the word 'still' form a contrast: the goal is already in view, yet a full day's journey remains to be endured. The opening line writes a traveler's psychological truth — seeing is not arriving.

The merchants sleep through midday, and one knows the waves are still; at night the boatmen murmur, and one feels the tide is rising.

This is the poem's famous couplet: the water's state inferred from other people's motions — sleeping, murmuring — observation and sensation both one step removed, the tedium of shipboard life told entirely sideways.

My graying temples meet the autumn of the Three Xiang; my homeward heart of ten thousand li faces the bright moon.

The Three Xiang is the Xiang river country. Graying temples meeting autumn, homeward heart facing the moon: the most common images of the river road, matched with perfect steadiness — critics praised the couplet's scene and feeling each carrying its own line.

English translation

The old estate is gone with all the wars; how can I bear the sound of war drums on the river?

How can I bear presses one step further: the estate already lost, and now the drums — war chasing this refugee family all along the water.

Writing the Self Through Others: Indirect Sensation Aboard Ship

The second couplet's method is to know the world through others: the merchants sleep at midday, so the waves are still (rough water keeps men awake); the boatmen murmur at night, so the tide is rising (the rising tide calls the crew to work). The poet never appears directly, yet he is the only one aboard awake with nothing to do — an idleness that is the heaviest thing in the poem: in flight, with no task left, one can only listen to other people sleeping and boatmen talking. Critics have set this couplet beside Meng Haoran's airy spareness and credited Lu Lun with a new precision in travel poetry. The indirect method does one thing more: the others keep their ordinary hours, showing that beyond the war daily life continues — which is exactly what makes the war drums of the close so harsh.

A Refugee's Route: the Circumstances Behind the Poem

The Complete Tang Poems notes beneath the title: composed in the Zhide years, 756–758, the fiercest stretch of the An Lushan rebellion. Lu Lun's home was Puzhou in Shanxi; fleeing south through the wars he sojourned in Poyang, then traveled up the Yangtze, mooring for the night at Ezhou — today's Wuchang. The old estate gone with all the wars is not a figure: the Lu family stood between the two capitals of the north, their property destroyed. The ci of the title, late mooring, marks a temporary stop — this is not the journey's end, for a refugee has no end. With this in view, the first couplet's still this lone sail has a full day's journey takes on another layer: what if Hanyang comes in sight? Hanyang is not home either.

The Sound of War Drums: the Invasion of the Closing Line

Through the first three couplets the river is quiet: still waves, rising tide, bright moon, nothing louder than the boatmen's murmurs. Then the war drums of the close shatter the river's soundscape — how can I bear pushes the psyche to its edge. The structure of the ending matters: the war is not distant (the estate gone is past tense); it is on this very river (the drums are present tense) — the refugee fleeing south with the sound of war following all the way. Lu Lun was among the Ten Talents of Dali the one who knew war most intimately, and his frontier poems are prized for exactly this memory of sound: to one who has lived through war, the drum is not a figure of speech but a reflex.
