215. Seeing Cui Jiu Off | Pei Di
Text
English translation
English translation
As you return to the mountains, whether near or deep within them, take in all the beauty of their hills and valleys.
Deep and shallow gathers up the mountain's varying reaches, while fully urges the friend to experience them without holding back. The farewell begins by asking him not to waste the landscape he has chosen.
English translation
Do not imitate the man from Wuling, who stayed in Peach Blossom Spring only briefly and then left.
The allusion comes from Tao Yuanming's account: after leaving the hidden settlement, the fisherman could never find the entrance again. The friend is urged to make a real life in the mountains rather than treat retreat as a short visit.

More Than a Mountain Farewell
The title announces a farewell, yet the poem has no long road, emptied wine cup, or direct grief. Pei Di is concerned with how his friend will live after entering the mountains. The first couplet says the landscape deserves full attention; the second warns against returning too soon. The emphasis shifts from reluctance to part with a friend to asking him to live out the choice he has made.
Reversing the Peach Blossom Spring Story
Allusions to Peach Blossom Spring usually emphasize the accidental discovery of an ideal world. Pei Di reads the story one step further: the fisherman leaves, reveals the place, and cannot find it again. The warning becomes practical — a life in the mountains cannot rest on a passing enthusiasm. The poem does not claim that retreat is perfect; it asks the friend not to behave like a hurried visitor.
