196. Untitled (Last Night the Stars Were Bright) | Li Shangyin
Text
English translation
English translation
Last night the stars were bright, last night the breeze was mild — west of the painted tower, east of the cassia hall.
The doubled last night opens in the tone of recollection, location fixed at once. The place is precise to its compass points, yet nothing of what happened is told — the blank begins with line one.
English translation
My body lacks the paired wings of the colorful phoenix; yet my heart, like the rhinoceros horn, is joined by one thread.
The lack of wings and the having of the linked horn are negation against possession: the bodies kept apart, the hearts connected. The rhinoceros horn carries a single white thread — the ancients took it as the channel of mutual feeling.
English translation
Across the seats we play the hook-passing game, the spring wine warm; in teams we guess the covered thing, the candle burning red.
Hook-passing and guessing the covered thing are banquet games. The two lines paint the party's liveliness — liveliness as backdrop; the two hearts isolated inside the crowd are the foreground.
English translation
Ah me — the drum sounds, and I must go on duty; spurring to the Lantai, like tumbleweed turning before the wind.
The Lantai is the Palace Library, where Li Shangyin served as collator. Tumbleweed blown from its root: the banquet over, each to his post, and his the most unmoored of all.

Untitled: the Work a Title Does
Li Shangyin left more than a dozen poems titled Untitled, and the titling is itself content: a titled poem points to a definite person or affair; an Untitled poem points to a relationship that cannot be named — perhaps love (its object unspeakable), perhaps politics (the quarrel with the Linghu faction unspeakable). Commentators have argued between the two ever since, which proves the design: Untitled is a built refuge, refusing identification, leaving feeling itself. This poem's structure is standard Untitled: one night of intimacy (last night), no union possible (lacks the wings), hearts joined (linked horn), forced departure (on duty). Nowhere a proposition of the poet's, all of it states of things — the reader assembles the story alone.
Lacks the Wings, Has the Link: the Couplets Carry the Whole Argument
The second couplet is his most famous: my body lacks the paired wings; my heart has the linked horn. The power is structural: lacking and having set in one breath, body and heart divided into separate jurisdictions — the body under reality's law (no wings, no meeting), the heart outside it (the horn's thread joins of itself). Not merely a figure but a complete theory of love: the true distance between two people exists only at the level of the body. One linked thread has since left the poem for the common tongue, but the parallel is richer than the idiom: kingfisher-phoenix against magic horn (myth against marvel), paired wings against one thread (number against number), wings against joined (form against verb) — each layer fastening separation that is not separation.
Banquet Games and the Library Drum: Two Strokes of the Clock in One Night
Between the third couplet and the last falls the sound of a drum: one moment hook-passing and covered-things, spring wine and red candle (the banquet at height); the next, hearing the drum, on duty, spurring to the Lantai (the hour of office). The contrast draws the boundary of an official's night: however deep the party, the fifth-watch drum sends him back. Li Shangyin held the junior post of collator at the Palace Library — elegant and poorly paid — and the tumbleweed self-likeness carries double disappointment: from the man whose heart was joined across a banquet, back to one screw in the machinery of the bureau. The ending voids at a stroke the warmth of the six lines before: the beauty of no wings yet joined hearts loses to the drum's discipline. Affair and duty changing shifts in one night — the poem's most modern face.
