English translation

Beyond the Sword Gate news suddenly comes that Jibei is recovered; at first hearing, tears wet my garments through.

Suddenly comes and at first hearing are both instant reactions: the news is abrupt, the response unadorned. The tears are tears of overwhelming joy.

English translation

I turn to look at wife and children — where has the old sorrow gone? Rolling up my books and papers at random, wild with joy.

Turning to look at the family is a detail: the joy must be confirmed on their faces first. The word at random is the madness — the books are not packed but swept up.

English translation

In broad daylight I must sing aloud and give the wine free rein; with the bright spring for company, the road home at last lies open.

Broad daylight and bright spring: a palette of light the sorrowing poet rarely allows himself. The road home was his obsession, and at last it has a beginning.

Straightaway from Ba Gorge through Wu Gorge, then down to Xiangyang and on toward Luoyang.

Four place names in two lines make the poem's most celebrated device: Ba Gorge, Wu Gorge, Xiangyang, Luoyang — the whole journey completed in imagination overnight. This speed of a spirit racing a thousand li is the summit of the poem's ecstasy.

杜甫生平第一快诗 · The Swiftest Poem of Du Fu's Life

Pu Qilong's Reading Du Fu with the Heart calls this the swiftest poem of Du Fu's whole life. In the spring of 763, the An Lushan rebellion, seven years and more, ended with Shi Chaoyi's suicide and the recovery of Hebei; Du Fu, a refugee in Zizhou, heard the news and wrote these fifty-six characters in one breath. The swiftness shows three ways: in reaction — suddenly comes, at first hearing, straightaway, then down, a string of instant words; in motion — the books swept up, never packed neatly; in homing speed — four place names crossed in imagination in a night. Regulated verse prizes restraint and ease; this poem wins by velocity alone, eight lines in one pour, acknowledged as the lone example of ecstasy written in the regulated form.

四个地名的归乡路线 · The Homeward Route in Four Place Names

Straightaway from Ba Gorge through Wu Gorge, then down to Xiangyang and on toward Luoyang — fourteen characters analyzed by every generation. The route is geographically real: downriver from Zizhou through the Three Gorges, out to Xiangyang, then overland north to Luoyang. The device lives in the two pairs of verbs: from and through, the hard upstream labor; down and toward, the swift release of the current — the rhythm of homecoming carried entirely in the verbs. And none of it is happening: the man still sits in Zizhou, the journey wholly imagined. Critics set it beside Li Bai's a thousand li to Jiangling in a single day: Li Bai exaggerates a real journey; Du Fu flies on pure imagination — a fugitive completing the road home fourteen characters ahead of time.

涕泪满衣裳:喜为什么先哭 · Tears Wet My Garments: Why Joy Weeps First

The first response to great good news is weeping — the truest detail of the poem. Through seven years of war Du Fu lost office, watched his children go hungry, sold medicine in the markets of Chang'an, his wife and children dragged through every upheaval — when the recovery came, what had been pressed down for seven years broke out at once. The turn is the next line: he turns to look at wife and children, where has the sorrow gone — he must confirm on their faces that this joy belongs to everyone, and only then dares go wild. This order — weep first, look second, rave last — is exactly a middle-aged man burdened with a whole household receiving the news of release: joy is never one person's affair. A critic once called the poem one word, one tear; it is the reverse — one word, one joy, joy at its deepest wearing the shape of tears.
