201. Untitled (Hard Was Our Meeting) | Li Shangyin
Text
English translation
English translation
Hard was our meeting, hard is parting; the east wind has spent its strength, a hundred flowers fall.
The two hard characters mean different things: the first is rarity, the second pain — one word used twice is the poem's engine. The spent east wind is late spring as fact and both parties' circumstances as figure.
English translation
The spring silkworm spins its silk to the death; the candle dries its tears only when burned to ash.
Silk puns on longing; the candle's tears are its wax — two puns writing till death do us part as two production processes: the silkworm's whole life (spinning to death) and the candle's whole life (burning to ash). The most famous couplet in Tang poetry.
English translation
At morning's mirror you will grieve, fearing the cloud of your hair to change; at night when you chant, the moonlight must feel cold.
Will grieve and must feel are both inferred: the poet imagines her day and night — the mirror her morning, the chanting her midnight. Both lines feel on her behalf.
English translation
The hills of Penglai are not so far from here; let the bluebird diligently enquire for me.
Penglai and the bluebird are fairyland and its messenger. Not so far contradicts every despair before it — the closeness of the ending is a fictional comfort: knowing there is no road, he says the road is short.
Commentary
The Silkworm and the Candle: Two Puns Made Immortal
The couplet's greatness is to translate a vow into two production processes: the silkworm spins its silk — longing (sī) — and stops only at death; the candle burns its tears — wax — and dries only at ash. Neither image is an invented figure; both are the commonest objects of Tang life (silk-rearing, candle-burning), and Li Shangyin's gift is the fuse of the puns. From Song to Yuan and after, every poem of love till death has had to detour past this couplet or salute it; even its critics (Qian Zhongshu thought it said too much to the bottom) concede it leaves the promise of love no retreat. For one line to become the upper limit of the language of vows — literary history offers no second case.
Morning Mirror, Midnight Chant: Living a Day on the Other's Behalf
The third couplet's shift of viewpoint is the poem's tenderness: the poet absent, he can only infer — she at her morning mirror (grieving that the cloud of hair must change: age and strain), she at midnight chant (the moonlight must feel cold: the texture of solitude). But will grieve and must feel both mark the inference: he installs his own feeling into her. This living of a day on her behalf is empathy's technical limit: not I miss you but this hour's mirror, this night's moonlight, I bear them through for you. The two times, morning and night, assemble into a whole day — every day of his absence, thus lived once through in imagination.
Not So Far: the Kind Fiction of the Ending
By the poem's own logic the ending should darken further — six lines have already reached till death. Instead the close turns: the hills of Penglai are not so far; let the bluebird enquire for me. Penglai is fairyland (in the other Untitled poem it lay ten thousand ranges off), and here not so far — one mountain, two distances. The contradiction reads as fiction: knowing there is no road, he dispatches a bird of myth. The bluebird is the Queen Mother of the West's messenger, needing no postal relay of the human world — every hope of the ending is banked in mythology, irrelevant to real geography. This road-building inside fiction gives the despairing poem an exit; where the exit leads matters less than the act of building.
