Layered curtains hang deep in Mochou's hall; when she lies down, the clear night stretches, fine and long.

Mochou, the girl of the old yuefu (Where does Mochou dwell?), stands for the women's chamber. Fine and long gives the texture of sleeplessness: the night is not long — it stretches finely, every inch of it felt.

The goddess's romance was after all only a dream; where the little maiden dwells there never was a lord.

The goddess is the Lady of Wu Mountain, met only in the Chu king's dream; the little maiden is the spirit of Qingxi shrine, whose song says no lord ever dwelt there. Both allusions say the same: the meeting never truly happened.

The wind and waves will not believe how frail the water-chestnut's stem, and break it; who taught the cassia leaf its fragrance under moon and dew?

The frail stem and the fragrant leaf mirror the speaker two ways: the weak one bullied by wind and wave (harm from outside), the fragrant one perfuming with no one's instruction (gift unrecognized). One line suffering, one line masterless.

Even granting this longing brings no good at all, it does not hinder my melancholy from being a pure madness.

Even granting is the sense of zhidao. Pure madness is the free spirit's style — the close renames useless longing as a choice of character: knowing it profits nothing and continuing regardless is not folly; it is madness, and of the noble kind.

Pure Madness: the Summary of Li Shangyin's View of Love

Even granting this longing brings no good, it does not hinder my melancholy from being a pure madness is the philosophical terminus of all the Untitled poems: the value of longing does not depend on outcome. The concession of even granting is total — the feeling profits nothing, returns nothing, leads nowhere; the reversal of it does not hinder is equally total — worthlessness is no reason to stop. Pure madness refiles the conduct from folly to style: to act knowing one cannot is the tradition of the mad worthies (Jie Yu, Ruan Ji). Critics speak of his grief as heartbreaking beyond measure; its core is this line's stance: to carry a hopeless feeling to the end, and carry it beautifully. Only at this poem does the Untitled group disclose its common ground.

The Goddess and the Little Maiden: Two Loves That Never Happened

The two allusions of the second couplet form a studied tautology: the Lady of Wu Mountain met the Chu king only in dream (gone at waking); the maiden of Qingxi is a spirit of her shrine, and the song's own words say no lord ever dwelt there. One story unreal, the other void — together they deny the affair's facticity: not thwarted, but never begun. The denial is more radical than the barriers of the other Untitled poems (ten thousand ranges, or hills not far): behind a barrier the other person still exists; in non-occurrence even the object is suspended. The fine long night of sleeplessness thus acquires its content: she re-examines a memory, trying to confirm whether it ever happened — and the verdict is entered in the couplet: it did not.

The Frail Stem and the Fragrant Leaf: a Double Self-Portrait of Harm and Gift

The self-figures of the third couplet work in two layers: the frail stem is the situation — the weak one singled out by wind and wave (will not believe makes the harm deliberate: it refuses even to credit her frailty); the fragrant leaf is the essence — the perfume no dew instructed (who taught is a rhetorical question: no one; it is inborn). Together the lines are a complete self-statement: I am harmed, and what is harmed is not my worth — the fragrance stands. This is the allegory of Li Shangyin's whole career: factional storms broke his official path (the stem), his poetry perfumed regardless (the leaf). Put into a woman's voice, it becomes her last self-vindication — betrayed, and none the lesser for it — entered before the declaration of pure madness, argued already in the objects themselves.
