English translation

Wang Jun's tower-ships came down from Yizhou; the royal aura of Jinling dimmed and was gathered in.

Wang Jun was governor of Yizhou who built great tower-ships for the conquest of Wu. The verb came down carries the momentum of the current: the fleet leaves the gorges, and Jinling's destiny is spent in a stroke.

English translation

The thousand-fathom iron chains sank to the river's bed; one strip of surrender banner rose over Stone City.

Wu strung iron chains across the river to bar the Jin fleet, and Wang Jun burned them through. A thousand fathoms against one strip: the longest defense answered by the smallest cloth — the whole weight lies in the contrast.

English translation

How many times has the world grieved over bygone things; the mountain's form still pillows the cold current as before.

How many times against as before: human affairs keep changing; the mountain does not. The verb pillows makes the mountain a sleeper, long accustomed to triumph and fall.

English translation

Now comes the day when all within the four seas is one household; only the old ramparts stand desolate, reeds and rushes in the autumn wind.

All within the four seas is one household comes from the Records — the realm united. The old ramparts are the traces of Wu's river defense — all that remains of the war is reeds in autumn wind.

One Poem Settling an Argument: When It Was Written and Whom It Meant

In 824, moving from Kuizhou to Hezhou, Liu Yuxi passed Xisai Mountain on the river; tradition adds that at Bai Juyi's table he, Yuan Zhen and Wei Chuke were set to write on Jinling's past, and Liu finished this piece in the bath within half a day — Bai read it and set down his brush: four men diving for the pearl, and you have it. Another account places it simply on the journey east, no table involved. The poem's contemporary edge has always been clear: in mid-Tang the regional commanders held their terrain like kings, and the contrast between the iron chains' failure and the day when all four seas are one household is aimed at any who might try it again. Meditating on the past on the surface, warning the present beneath — one reason Liu Yuxi is called the mettlesome one among poets.

Four Lines of Sheer Narrative: a Whole War in Two Couplets

Tower-ships came down from Yizhou; the royal aura dimmed and was gathered in; the iron chains sank to the riverbed; one strip of surrender banner rose over Stone City — the first four couplets finish the entire Jin conquest of Wu: the launching, the failing of aura, the collapse of defense, the surrender of the state. The history is pressed into four shots, each of nouns and verbs only, without one adjective or sigh. Such a purely narrative opening is rare in poems on the past — convention demands scenic preparation first. Liu Yuxi's confidence: the story itself is shocking enough and needs no dressing. The parallel of a thousand fathoms against one strip is thus the poem's hinge: the defenders' longest chain against the attackers' smallest cloth — the mismatch of force on the surface, and behind the surface, the whole reason for the defeat: trusting to terrain, losing the people.

The Mountain Still Pillows the Cold Current: a View of Landscape for Poems on the Past

The third couplet suddenly empties the war narrative: how many generations have grieved over bygone things — and the mountain's form still pillows the cold current. Pillows is the couplet's eye: the mountain does not face the river but sleeps on it, indifferent. Liu Yuxi's poems on the past share one settled view of landscape: mountains and rivers are time's witnesses; human affairs its passersby (his Stone City, the tide beats on the empty fortress and returns in solitude, runs the same logic). The old ramparts desolate, reeds in autumn wind is where the view lands: the river defense of two millennia ago is covered by plants — all traces of war absorbed by vegetation. The order to remember in reading this poem: first the affairs of men, then the landscape, and last the landscape swallowing the affairs of men.
