228. The New Bride | Wang Jian
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
三日入厨下,洗手作羹汤。
English translation
On the third day after her marriage, the bride enters the kitchen, washes her hands, and prepares a soup.
The poem reflects an older custom in which a new bride entered the kitchen to serve the household elders. Washing her hands is practical and also shows her care on this first occasion.
Original Chinese text
未谙姑食性,先遣小姑尝。
English translation
Not yet knowing her mother-in-law's taste, she first asks her young sister-in-law to sample it.
Gu means the husband's mother, while the younger gu is his sister. Rather than serve the dish blindly, the bride consults someone who knows the mother's preferences.
赏析 · Commentary
聪明写在一个小动作里 · Practical Intelligence in a Small Action
新娘面对的是陌生家庭中的第一次考验。她认真做羹汤,也清楚仅靠认真不够,因为自己不知道婆婆的口味。请小姑先尝,不是讨巧的空话,而是利用家中已有的信息减少失误。四句没有评价她聪明,做法已经说明了一切。
The bride faces an early test in an unfamiliar household. She prepares the soup carefully but knows that care alone is insufficient because she does not know her mother-in-law's taste. Asking the sister to sample it uses knowledge already present in the family and reduces the chance of error. The poem never calls her clever; the action does so.
读懂习俗,也看见压力 · Understanding the Custom and the Pressure
旧时读者可能先看到新娘的能干,今天也会注意到她必须迅速适应夫家规则的压力。这两种理解可以同时存在。诗写得轻巧,却没有说她是否愿意承担这样的角色。现代阅读不必美化旧制度,也不必忽略人物在限制中表现出的判断力。
Earlier readers may first have admired the bride's competence; readers today may also notice the pressure to adapt quickly to her husband's household. Both perceptions can stand. The poem is light in tone but does not tell us whether she welcomes the role. A modern reading need not romanticize the old system, nor overlook the judgment she exercises within its constraints.
