263. A Soldier's Complaint | Liu Zhongyong
Text
English translation
English translation
Year after year, now Golden River, now Jade Gate; day after day, only the horsewhip and the sword-ring.
Golden River and Jade Gate are frontier place-names standing for the garrison lands a soldier shuttles between. The horsewhip and the ring on a sword hilt stand for the weapons kept always at hand. Year after year and day after day pile up to show a frontier life that repeats without end.
English translation
In the third month of spring, white snow still falls around the Green Tomb; the Yellow River, ten thousand li long, flows winding past Black Mountain.
The third month is late spring; snow still falling there shows how bitter the frontier climate is. The Green Tomb is said to be the grave of Wang Zhaojun in what is now Inner Mongolia, and Black Mountain is a frontier peak. These vast, barren vistas place the soldier at the far edge of the world.

Repetition Itself Is the Complaint
The opening couplet stacks year after year upon day after day and pairs one frontier with another, one weapon with another, compressing long stretches of time into an unchanging routine: always shuttling between garrison lands, always with only a whip and a blade. No single battle is described; the repetition itself becomes the source of complaint.
A Frontier Map Drawn from Place-Names
Golden River, Jade Gate, Green Tomb, and Black Mountain form a map that keeps moving. They lie far apart, yet are packed into four short lines, so the soldier's steps seem endlessly stretched. Snow in late spring and a river winding around mountains add cold and emptiness. The complaint rests not on argument but on sheer distance.
