97. Seeing Off Lord Yan Again at Fengji Post, Four Rhymes | Du Fu
Text
English translation
Original Chinese text
远送从此别,青山空复情。
English translation
I have escorted you far; from here we part. The green hills remain as before, yet their feeling is all in vain.
“Seeing off again” means this is a second farewell. The hills do not move, while the human parting feeling has nowhere to rest; the three words “vainly still full of feeling” are the ground note of the whole poem.
Original Chinese text
几时杯重把,昨夜月同行。
English translation
When shall we lift the cup together again? Last night we walked along under the moon.
A question and a memory set side by side: a promise for the future and a scene from last night. Walking under the moon is literal, and it compresses the interval since parting into a single day.
Original Chinese text
列郡讴歌惜,三朝出入荣。
English translation
The commanderies sing your praise and grieve to see you go; through three reigns you came and went in honor.
Yan Wu had governed Shu and was well spoken of, so the commanderies singing his praise is fact. Through three reigns means he served under Xuanzong, Suzong, and Daizong — a rare record.
Original Chinese text
江村独归处,寂寞养残生。
English translation
Alone I return to the river village, to nurse what life is left in solitude.
Yan Wu was Du Fu's support in Chengdu, and his leaving Shu left Du Fu without backing. The last line turns the sorrow of farewell into a plain statement of his own condition.

「重送」的具体含义 · What Seeing Off Again Specifically Means
题目说「重送」,是因为此前杜甫已在成都送过严武一次,这次在奉济驿再送。第二次送别的心情与第一次不同:第一次还有期待,第二次已知此别之后自己失去依靠。理解这一点,才能读出「青山空复情」的份量——不是普通的离愁,是知道境遇将变的怅然。唐诗的长题常这样把背景压缩进去,读题和读诗一样要紧。
The title says seeing off again because Du Fu had already seen Yan Wu off once at Chengdu and does so once more at Fengji Post. A second farewell differs from a first: at the first there was still expectation; at the second he already knows that after this he loses his support. Only with this in mind does full of feeling to no purpose carry its weight — not ordinary parting sorrow but the blankness of knowing his circumstances will change. Long titles in Tang poems often compress the background this way, and reading the title matters as much as reading the poem.
末联为什么比前面更重 · Why the Last Couplet Weighs More Than What Precedes
前两联写离情,第三联写严武的功业声望,都是关于对方的。到末联忽然转到自己:送走你之后,我独自回江村,寂寞度日。这一转让全诗的重心落地——原来送别的不只是朋友,也是自己的依靠。杜甫在成都依严武而居,严武一死,他不久就离开成都。末句说的「残生」,后来看几乎是实话。
The first two couplets give the feeling of parting, the third Yan Wu's achievements and standing — all about the other man. Then the last couplet turns suddenly to himself: after seeing you off, I go back to the river village alone to pass the days in solitude. The turn lands the poem's weight — what is being seen off is not only a friend but his own support. Du Fu lived in Chengdu depending on Yan Wu, and when Yan Wu died he soon left. What the last line calls the life left turned out to be nearly literal.
「月同行」的时间感 · The Sense of Time in Walking Under the Moon
「昨夜月同行」把时间拉得很近:昨天晚上还在一起走,今天就要分手。这一句不需要任何解释,读者自己感到分别来得快。而且「月同行」把送别的场景放在夜里,与首联的「青山」白天之景形成对照,也暗示两人一路同行了很远。五律字数少,一句里既写时间又写空间,是常见的用法。
Last night we walked along under the moon pulls the time very close: last night still walking together, today parting. The line needs no explanation; the reader feels how quickly the parting came. And walking under the moon sets a farewell scene at night, contrasting the green hills of the opening couplet by day, and hinting that the two had traveled a long way together. With few characters in regulated verse, writing both time and space in one line is common practice.
