Text

English translation

Original Chinese text

English translation

In the long night, clear zither notes are played; the west wind rises from the green vines.

"Fan" means to play and also to float; "far night" means a long night. The first line writes of sound, the second of wind—both are things not easily noticed on an early autumn night.

Original Chinese text

English translation

Lingering fireflies rest on crystalline dew; early geese brush past the Milky Way.

"Lingering fireflies" are what remains at the end of summer; "early geese" are the first to come in early autumn. One is on the earth, one in the sky; both point to the season turning.

Original Chinese text

English translation

Tall trees at dawn still look dense; distant mountains in clear weather reveal more layers.

"Dense at dawn" describes the heaviness of the leaves before the night dew dries; "more in clear weather" describes the layering of the mountains in the light. Both lines are "changes seen by looking."

Original Chinese text

English translation

In Huainan a single leaf falls; I feel that I too have grown old amid the misty waves.

"One leaf falls" uses the sense of "one leaf tells autumn." The closing line writes a sudden self-awareness: from a single leaf he thinks of his own age.

赏析 · Commentary

写早秋,关键是「早」 · Writing Early Autumn: The Point Is "Early"

这首诗的每一句都在写「刚刚开始」的迹象:夜还是长夜,瑟声是清的,风从藤萝间生出来,萤火虫是残的,雁是早的,树在晓时还密。这些都是转折点上才有的样子——夏意未退,秋气已来。许浑没有一句写「秋」字之后的萧瑟,全在写临界。抓住「早」,比写「秋」难得多。

Every line marks something just beginning: the night is still long, the zither sounds clear, the wind comes up through vines, the fireflies are leftovers, the geese are early, the trees are still dense at dawn. These are looks that belong only to a turning point — summer has not withdrawn and autumn's air has arrived. Xu Hun writes none of the bleakness that comes later in the season; he writes the threshold. Catching "early" is much harder than writing "autumn."

中间两联的对仗 · The Parallelism in the Middle

「残萤」对「早雁」,「玉露」对「银河」,一微一巨,一低一高。「高树」对「远山」,「晓」对「晴」,「还密」对「更多」,都是远近和明暗的配合。许浑的对仗不追求新奇,讲究的是两句话合起来把空间铺满。读这两联,等于站在一个点上环顾一圈。

"Leftover fireflies" against "early geese," "jade dew" against "the Milky Way": tiny against vast, low against high. "Tall trees" against "distant hills," "dawn" against "clear," "still dense" against "more of them": near and far, light and shade matched. Xu Hun's parallelism is not after novelty; it wants two lines that jointly fill the space. Reading these couplets is like standing at one point and turning full circle.

末句的「自觉」 · "Self-Awareness" in the Last Line

「自觉老烟波」五个字里,「自觉」是关键。不是别人提醒他老了,也不是他刻意去想,是看到一片叶子落下,忽然意识到了。这个「忽然」让末句有了重量——衰老不是慢慢算出来的,是某一刻发现的。前面六句写景写得很细,等的就是这一下。

Of the five characters in "and I feel myself old on the misted water," the key is "feel myself." No one reminds him of his age and he does not set out to consider it; he sees one leaf fall and suddenly knows. That suddenness gives the close its weight — ageing is not calculated gradually but discovered at a moment. The six lines of close observation before it are waiting for exactly this.
