The timekeeper in his crimson cap sends in the dawn tallies; the Master of Robes presents the kingfisher-cloud fur.

The crimson-capped timekeeper imitates the cock's crow to announce the hour; the Master of Robes attends the emperor's dress. Two details, both procedural — time reported first, robes offered after; the Son of Heaven is about to rise.

Like the gates of ninth heaven the palace doors swing open; the caps and gowns of ten thousand lands bow before the tasselled crown.

The ninth heaven makes the palace gates heaven's own; the caps and gowns of ten thousand lands are the tribute envoys. This is the poem's grandest couplet and a self-portrait of the Tang world order.

As soon as sunlight touches, the immortal fans begin to sway; the incense smoke would fain drift beside the dragon-robed figure.

The immortal fans are the ceremonial screens; the dragon robe the emperor's. Sunlight and smoke, two natural things, are written as courtiers paying court: the light arrives, the smoke draws near — even objects arrange his dignity.

When audience ends there are five-colored edicts to draft; to the sound of pendant jades he returns toward the Phoenix Pool's head.

Five-colored edicts and the Phoenix Pool both point to Jia Zhi's Secretariat. The close hands the poem back to the original poet: your morning does not end in leisure — it returns to brush and ink.

The Most Official of the Four Matching Poems

Wang Wei's reply is the most ceremonial and most ordered of the four. He begins with the emperor rising — tallies sent in, robes presented — advances through the opening of gates, the homage of nations, sunlight and incense, and lands on Jia drafting edicts after court. The poem reads like a shot composed strictly by protocol, without the liveliness of Cen Shen's birds or the private undertow of Du Fu's. Judges praised the ninth-heaven couplet for a grandeur that holds the scene; some find it too perfectly even. But Wang Wei's gift is exactly this: to take so formulaic a subject and make every word sit right, nothing out of place — itself the High Tang temper: institutional confidence written into verse, and written with composure.

Why the Ninth-Heaven Couplet Holds the Stage

Like the gates of ninth heaven the palace doors swing open; the caps and gowns of ten thousand lands bow before the tasselled crown — ten characters covering the space from heaven's gates to the palace, and the people from ten thousand lands down to one man. The first line's opens creates depth: gate behind gate opening, like heaven's own layers; the second line's bow creates centripetal force: every figure faces one direction. Together the reader stands outside the hall and sees not just a morning audience but the vertical structure of an empire. The numbers are studied too: ninth heaven against ten thousand lands, false number against false number — none is literal, and the grandeur is larger for it. Cen Shen's ten thousand gates and thousand officials can still be counted; Wang Wei opens at once with nine and ten thousand, lifting the register straight into myth.

The Close Returns to Jia Zhi: the Courtesy of a Matching Poem

All four replies must solve the same problem: how to hand the conversation back to the original poet. Cen Shen lowers himself — a song so lofty it is hard to answer; Du Fu voices admiration — only the guest on the Phoenix Pool; Wang Wei's solution is the most concrete: he imagines Jia, audience over, returning to the Secretariat to draft edicts, the sound of his jade pendants chiming all the way to the Phoenix Pool's head. The line is factual — such was his office — and at the same time a veiled tribute: your morning does not end at court; the more important work is waiting at the desk. The five-colored edicts put beauty into the very color of statecraft, chaining with the crimson cap, kingfisher fur, golden towers and dragon robe. A matching poem at this level: courtesy become art.
