孟（mèng）子（zǐ）曰（yuē）：（）“（）鸡（jī）鸣（míng）而（ér）起（qǐ），（）孳（zī）孳（zī）为（wèi）善（shàn）者（zhě），（）舜（shùn）之（zhī）徒（tú）也（yě）。（）鸡（jī）鸣（míng）而（ér）起（qǐ），（）孳（zī）孳（zī）为（wèi）利（lì）者（zhě），（）跖（zhí）之（zhī）徒（tú）也（yě）。（）欲（yù）知（zhī）舜（shùn）与（yǔ）跖（zhí）之（zhī）分（fēn），（）无（wú）他（tā），（）利（lì）与（yǔ）善（shàn）之（zhī）间（jiān）也（yě）。（）”（）

Mencius said, “Those who rise at daybreak and diligently pursue goodness belong to the company of Shun. Those who rise at daybreak and diligently pursue profit belong to the company of Zhi the Robber. The difference between Shun and Zhi lies in nothing else: it is whether one pursues what is good or what is profitable.”
