孟（mèng）子（zǐ）曰（yuē）：（）“（）‘（）求（qiú）则（zé）得（dé）之（zhī），（）舍（shě）则（zé）失（shī）之（zhī）’（），（）是（shì）求（qiú）有（yǒu）益（yì）于（yú）得（dé）也（yě），（）求（qiú）在（zài）我（wǒ）者（zhě）也（yě）。（）‘（）求（qiú）之（zhī）有（yǒu）道（dào），（）得（dé）之（zhī）有（yǒu）命（mìng）’（），（）是（shì）求（qiú）无（wú）益（yì）于（yú）得（dé）也（yě），（）求（qiú）在（zài）外（wài）者（zhě）也（yě）。（）”（）

Mencius said, “Seek and you obtain; abandon the seeking and you lose. Such seeking helps you attain what you seek because it is within your own control. Seek by the proper means, yet whether you obtain it depends on destiny; such seeking cannot itself ensure the result because it lies outside you.”
