No Righteous War

Mencius said that the Spring and Autumn Annals records no war that is truly righteous. There may be cases in which one side is better than another, but that does not make the war fully righteous. A “punitive expedition” properly means that a superior authority corrects a subordinate; equal states should not wage such expeditions against one another.
