The Succession of Sages
Text

Mencius said, “From Yao and Shun to King Tang was more than five hundred years. Yu and Gao Yao saw the sages and learned directly from them; Tang learned of them by report. From Tang to King Wen was again more than five hundred years: Yi Yin and Lai Zhu saw and learned from Tang, while Wen learned of Tang through tradition. From King Wen to Confucius was again more than five hundred years: the Grand Duke Wang and San Yisheng saw and learned from Wen, while Confucius learned of Wen through tradition. From Confucius to our own time is a little over a hundred years. We are not far removed from the age of the sages, and so close to the places where they lived. Yet if no one has appeared to carry on their way, then perhaps indeed no such person has appeared.”
