Yu’s Music and King Wen’s｜Mencius

高（gāo）子（zǐ）曰（yuē）：（）“（）禹（yǔ）之（zhī）声（shēng），（）尚（shàng）文（wén）王（wáng）之（zhī）声（shēng）。（）”（）

Gaozi said, “Yu’s music surpasses that of King Wen.”

孟（mèng）子（zǐ）曰（yuē）：（）“（）何（hé）以（yǐ）言（yán）之（zhī）？（）”（）

Mencius asked, “What makes you say so?”

曰（yuē）：（）“（）以（yǐ）追（zhuī）蠡（lí）。（）”（）

Gaozi replied, “Because the knob of Yu’s bell is worn down.”

曰（yuē）：（）“（）是（shì）奚（xī）足（zú）哉（zāi）？（）城（chéng）门（mén）之（zhī）轨（guǐ），（）两（liǎng）马（mǎ）之（zhī）力（lì）与（yǔ）？（）”（）

Mencius said, “How does that prove anything? The ruts in a city gate—were they made by the force of just two horses?”
