孟（mèng）子（zǐ）曰（yuē）：（）“（）有（yǒu）布（bù）缕（lǚ）之（zhī）征（zhēng），（）粟（sù）米（mǐ）之（zhī）征（zhēng），（）力（lì）役（yì）之（zhī）征（zhēng）。（）君（jūn）子（zǐ）用（yòng）其（qí）一（yī），（）缓（huǎn）其（qí）二（èr）。（）用（yòng）其（qí）二（èr）而（ér）民（mín）有（yǒu）殍（piǎo）；（）用（yòng）其（qí）三（sān）而（ér）父（fù）子（zǐ）离（lí）。（）”（）

Mencius said, “There are three kinds of levy: one on cloth, one on grain, and one in labor service. A ruler should use one and defer the other two. If two are imposed, people will starve; if all three are imposed, fathers and sons will be driven apart.”
