Commentary
The Spring Is Not in the Hills but in Two Worlds Not Knowing Each Other
Wang Wei does not put the weight on the wonder; he puts it on the relation between two worlds. The woodcutter is the first to bring in Han names; the people living there have not changed their Qin clothing — outside the dynasty has already turned over, inside they still wear Qin dress. Inside the gorge who knows of human affairs; from the world outside one sees only blank cloud and mountain — inside does not know the outside, and the outside cannot see in. These two places are the skeleton; the moonlit rooms, the cocks and dogs in the cloud, the sweeping at dawn, the boats coming home at dusk are life filled into that skeleton. And when the fisherman comes back and cannot find it, it is not that the hills changed: once the mutual unknowing is broken, the world folds itself away. The handling is cooler than Tao Yuanming's original — Tao left a mark that could be found again; Wang Wei rubs the mark out.
How He Got In: Turning a Straying into an Intention
In Tao Yuanming's original the fisherman goes along the stream and forgets how far he has come — he stumbles in. Wang Wei's opening changes it to the fishing boat follows the water, taken with the spring in the hills, supplying love as a motive first. The change looks small but alters the nature of the story: this man is not there by chance, he is drawn in by the scenery. Sitting and watching the red trees he loses track of the distance continues the absorption. When he leaves, the reason is likewise subjective — his dusty heart is not yet spent. Set against each other, both entrance and exit are his own choices, and the question of the peach blossom spring stops being a matter of luck and becomes a matter of whether this man deserves to stay.
Why the Ending Withholds an Answer
In the last couplet, when spring comes, peach blossom water is everywhere, and there is no telling where the spirit spring might be sought, Wang Wei does not say whether he found it. He says the man cannot tell one place from another. The clue that led him in was peach blossom; a year later peach blossom is at every water mouth, and the clue fails. This ending is harsher than writing he never found it again: never found it again still has the act of searching; cannot tell means even the direction is gone. The poem stops there, and all the concrete scenery before — the rooms, the cocks and dogs, the lanes, the fishers and woodcutters — is gathered into one blurred sentence. Most poems on this old yuefu title feel obliged to settle the matter; Wang Wei takes the settling away.
