长安城头有头白的乌鸦，夜里飞到延秋门上叫。

头白乌是乌鸦中的异类，旧说预示不祥。延秋门是玄宗出逃的西城门。

又（yòu）向（xiàng）人（rén）家（jiā）啄（zhuó）大（dà）屋（wū），（）屋（wū）底（dǐ）达（dá）官（guān）走（zǒu）避（bì）胡（hú）。（）

又飞到人家去啄大屋，屋子里的大官正在逃走躲避胡人。

乌鸦啄屋与达官出逃并置，「大屋」和「走」是对照。

金（jīn）鞭（biān）断（duàn）折（zhé）九（jiǔ）马（mǎ）死（sǐ），（）骨（gǔ）肉（ròu）不（bù）待（dài）同（tóng）驰（chí）驱（qū）。（）

金鞭折断，九匹马死去；骨肉至亲都来不及一同奔逃。

「九马」指随行的御马。写的是仓皇，连皇族都顾不上了。

腰（yāo）下（xià）宝（bǎo）玦（jué）青（qīng）珊（shān）瑚（hú），（）可（kě）怜（lián）王（wáng）孙（sūn）泣（qì）路（lù）隅（yú）。（）

腰下垂着宝玦和青珊瑚，可怜的王孙在路角哭泣。

先写身份标记，再写人。宝玦青珊瑚把他的出身交代清楚了。

问（wèn）之（zhī）不（bù）肯（kěn）道（dào）姓（xìng）名（míng），（）但（dàn）道（dào）困（kùn）苦（kǔ）乞（qǐ）为（wéi）奴（nú）。（）

问他，他不肯说出姓名，只说困苦，请求做个奴仆。

「不肯道姓名」是怕被认出。要去做奴仆，是宁可隐姓。

已（yǐ）经（jīng）百（bǎi）日（rì）窜（cuàn）荆（jīng）棘（jí），（）身（shēn）上（shàng）无（wú）有（yǒu）完（wán）肌（jī）肤（fū）。（）

已经在荆棘里躲了一百天，身上没有一块完好的皮肤。

「百日」是实指，从出逃到现在。身上无完肤，是把身份写在身体上。

高（gāo）帝（dì）子（zǐ）孙（sūn）尽（jìn）隆（lóng）准（zhǔn），（）龙（lóng）种（zhǒng）自（zì）与（yǔ）常（cháng）人（rén）殊（shū）。（）

高帝的子孙都是高鼻梁，龙种自然和常人不同。

「隆准」是刘邦的特征，《史记》记他「隆准而龙颜」。用相貌认皇族，是汉唐的旧说。

豺（chái）狼（láng）在（zài）邑（yì）龙（lóng）在（zài）野（yě），（）王（wáng）孙（sūn）善（shàn）保（bǎo）千（qiān）金（jīn）躯（qū）。（）

豺狼在城里，龙在野外；王孙啊，好好保全你这千金之躯。

「豺狼」与「龙」一句里对举，敌我各占一边。这是全诗第一次直接对王孙说话。

不（bù）敢（gǎn）长（cháng）语（yǔ）临（lín）交（jiāo）衢（qú），（）且（qiě）为（wèi）王（wáng）孙（sūn）立（lì）斯（sī）须（xū）。（）

在大路口不敢多说，姑且为王孙站一会儿。

「不敢」与「且」都是分寸。「立斯须」就是站一会儿，什么也没做。

昨（zuó）夜（yè）东（dōng）风（fēng）吹（chuī）血（xuè）腥（xīng），（）东（dōng）来（lái）橐（tuó）驼（tuó）满（mǎn）旧（jiù）都（dū）。（）

昨夜东风吹来血腥味，从东边来的骆驼队满布旧都。

「血腥」是嗅觉，「橐驼满旧都」是占领的具体样子。

朔（shuò）方（fāng）健（jiàn）儿（ér）好（hǎo）身（shēn）手（shǒu），（）昔（xī）何（hé）勇（yǒng）锐（ruì）今（jīn）何（hé）愚（yú）。（）

朔方的健儿身手很好，从前何等勇锐，如今何等迟钝。

两句一褒一贬，说的是同一批人。问而不答，是全诗的一个空缺。

窃（qiè）闻（wén）天（tiān）子（zǐ）已（yǐ）传（chuán）位（wèi），（）圣（shèng）德（dé）北（běi）服（fú）南（nán）单（chán）于（yú）。（）

私下听说天子已经传位，圣德使北方的南单于归服。

「窃闻」是私下听说，消息不可靠也要说，因为这是给王孙的安慰。

花（huā）门（mén）剺（lí）面（miàn）请（qǐng）雪（xuě）耻（chǐ），（）慎（shèn）勿（wù）出（chū）口（kǒu）他（tā）人（rén）狙（jū）。（）

花门的士兵割面立誓，请求洗雪国耻；千万不要说出去，别人在窥伺。

「剺面」是北方部族立誓的方式。前句是振奋的消息，后句立刻是警告。

哀（āi）哉（zāi）王（wáng）孙（sūn）慎（shèn）勿（wù）疏（shū），（）五（wǔ）陵（líng）佳（jiā）气（qì）无（wú）时（shí）无（wú）。（）

可哀啊王孙，千万不要疏忽；五陵的佳气没有消失的时候。

「五陵」是长安的皇陵所在，佳气指王气。结尾把希望放在这里，也只是一句希望。

赏析 · Commentary

从一只乌鸦写起 · It Begins with a Crow

全诗不从人写起，先从一只头白的乌鸦写起。它夜里飞、在城门上叫、又去啄大屋。等到第三句「屋底达官走避胡」，人才出现，而且是被乌鸦逼出来的。这个顺序有讲究：乌鸦的动作是反常的（白头的乌鸦本来就罕见，夜里飞更少见），反常的鸟先出场，后面的人事才显得是同一场灾异的一部分。杜甫写安史之乱的诗很多，常用的办法是把大事放小，从一个物件、一个动作、一个声音切进去。这首从乌鸦切，和他写《兵车行》从车轮声切进去是同一路。

The poem does not begin with a person but with a white-headed crow. It flies by night, cries on the city gate, then pecks at a great house. Only in the third line, beneath them the high officials are running from the nomads, do people appear, and the crow has driven them out. The order matters: the bird's behavior is abnormal — a white-headed crow is rare to begin with, and flying at night rarer — and an abnormal bird enters first, so the human events after read as part of the same portent. Du Fu wrote many poems on the An Lushan rebellion, and his usual method is to make great events small, entering through one object, one action, one sound. Beginning with a crow here is the same route as beginning the Song of the War Chariots with the sound of wheels.

「不肯道姓名」这一句的分量 · The Weight of He Will Not Give His Name

全诗到「问之不肯道姓名，但道困苦乞为奴」才第一次出现对话。杜甫问了他，他不说姓名。这个拒绝本身交代了两件事：一是他还在被追捕，说出姓氏会更危险；二是他不肯拿身份来换取同情。接下来的「但道困苦乞为奴」更狠——一个龙种，自己请求做奴仆。杜甫没有评价这两个字，只接着写他的身体：一百天躲在荆棘里，身上没有一块好皮。身份与处境之间拉开了距离，诗的力气就在这个距离上。

Only at asked, he will not give his name, only says he is in want and begs to be a slave does the poem have its first exchange. Du Fu asked, and he would not say his name. The refusal itself states two things: he is still being hunted, and naming his clan would make it worse; and he will not trade his rank for pity. Then he says only he is in want and begs to be a slave — even sharper, a dragon's descendant asking to be a slave. Du Fu does not comment on the words, only continues with his body: a hundred days among thorns, no whole skin left. Rank and circumstance are pulled apart, and the poem's force lies in that distance.

结尾的希望放在哪里 · Where the Ending Puts Its Hope

诗的后半段忽然换成劝慰的语气：听说天子已经传位，圣德北服南单于，花门的士兵割面立誓要雪耻。三个消息一个比一个振奋，可杜甫每一句都加了一个限制——「窃闻」是私下听说，「慎勿出口他人狙」是说完就不许再说，「哀哉王孙慎勿疏」是又一次叮嘱小心。振奋的消息全在传闻里，能做的动作只有「不要疏忽」。最后一句「五陵佳气无时无」，把希望交给长安的皇陵，那是一种信念，不是一件事。全诗的矛盾就收在这里：最需要力量的时候，只有气和传闻可用。

The second half turns suddenly consoling: he has heard the throne has passed on, sagely virtue has won over the Southern Khan, the men of Huamen swear to wipe away the shame. Three pieces of news, each more stirring than the last — and Du Fu attaches a limit to every one. Heard privately means word on the grapevine; be careful not to speak of it forbids repeating it the moment it is said; alas, prince, do not slacken is another warning to be careful. The stirring news is all rumor, and the only action available is do not slacken. The last line, the fine air of the Five Mounds is never absent, hands hope to the imperial tombs outside Chang'an — that is a faith, not an event. The poem's contradiction settles there: at the moment of greatest need, only an air and a rumor are available.
