The History of Reading One Poem: Mourning, Self-Lament, or Preface

The interpretation of the Brocade Zither is the most celebrated open case in Chinese poetics: mourning for his wife née Wang; lament for his own fall; preface theory (Yuan Haowen set the cuckoo line beside the zither and took the poem as preface to all his verse); love-lore (a maid of the Linghu household named Brocade Zither)... each age has had its champion, none conclusive. The open case is part of the poem's power: four allusions — butterfly, cuckoo, pearl, jade — with nothing in common except the loose frame of remembering the flowering years, and whatever the reader pours in becomes the poem. Yuan Haowen sighed that no Zheng Xuan had arisen to annotate it; Liang Qichao admitted he could not explain it and found it beautiful all the same — a poem that defeats its annotators while every reader feels it understood: this is why it has never faded.

Four Allusions in a Row: a Logic Without Logic

The arrangement of the four allusions in the middle couplets has been praised for centuries: the butterfly dream (bewilderment), the cuckoo (grief entrusted), the pearl-tears (radiance out of sorrow), the jade vapor (beauty ungraspable). The four stand independent — no chronology, no causation — with one thing common: all are transformations (man to butterfly, soul to cuckoo, tears to pearl, jade to vapor). Transformation is the essence of the flowering years: what is lost does not vanish; it exists in another form. Here Li Shangyin parts ways with the allusive tradition: the allusion is no longer evidence but image — needing not to be understood but to be received. The blur of the closing couplet is the fixing-bath for all four pictures: such it was even then; remembrance holds it less.

Fifty Strings for No Reason: Writing One's Age into an Instrument

The zither's strings are given as twenty-five or fifty by different traditions; Li Shangyin wrote at about forty-six or seven, and fifty strings mirror his own late years — yet he does not say I am old; he scolds the instrument: why for no reason so many strings? Transferring self-reproach to the zither is again the unreasonable made right. String by string, bridge by bridge turns the scold into inventory: one string one year, to play through is to live through again. The instrument is not a prop here but a kin: the mournful zither is recorded from the Odes and the Records (the Black Emperor had the maiden Sunü play the fifty-string zither, and he could not stop grieving) — the one instrument whose strings are many and its sound sorrowful, its number and his late years converted at a stroke in the opening.
