Why the Music Feels Cold

Cold does not mean that the strings are physically chilled. It is the sensation produced by the sound. The clear ring of lingling has no heaviness, and pine wind opens an imagined mountain space. Together they make the music spare and restrained. The poem says nothing about virtuosity; it records the atmosphere the sound leaves behind.

The Distance Between an Old Tune and the Present

The final couplet can sound like a blanket complaint about contemporaries, but its tone is closer to knowing that one's taste is unfashionable. The poet values the old tune and understands that few share the preference. Rarely played does not say that everyone is incapable of understanding it; the sadness lies in something cherished still existing while slowly leaving common life.
