East of the Mountains Is Not Modern Shandong Province
In the title, east of the mountains is generally understood as the area of Puzhou east of Mount Hua, where Wang Wei's family home lay, not the modern province of Shandong. This geography prevents the title from being mistaken for a journey across present-day provincial borders. The poem's situation remains simple: a young Wang Wei, away in Chang'an, thinks of his family on the Double Ninth.
A Family Gathering Seen Through an Absence
The last two lines mention neither letters nor a road home, only one person missing from the Double Ninth observance. The brothers are present and the dogwood is worn; the apparent completeness of the ritual exposes an empty place. By inserting his absence into the family's scene, the poet makes longing mutual: he thinks of home from afar and imagines home thinking of him.
